Scrapbook concerning the Collier controversy [manuscript], 1859-1860.

Compiled by S. Leigh Sotheby. Contains letters and clippings from newspapers, books and pamphlets relating principally to the Perkins Folio controversy. Letters include one from John Wilkinson, London, to Sotheby dated May 21, 1860 (leaf 88) and five letters from John Payne Collier to Sotheby (leaf 2; cataloged separately). Complete pamphlets include Curiosities of modern Shaksperian criticism by J.O. Halliwell, 1853 (leaves 13-16); Shakespeare fabrications by Clement Mansfield Ingleby, 1859 (leaves 32-44); An inquiry into the genuineness of the manuscript corrections in Mr. J. Payne Collier's annotated Shakspeare, folio, 1632 by N.E.S.A. Hamilton, 1860, with annotations (leaves 51-61); Mr. J. Payne Collier's reply to Mr. N.E.S.A. Hamilton's "Inquiry" into the imputed Shakespeare forgeries, 1860 (leaves 70-74); and A review of the present state of the Shakespearian controversy by Thomas Duffus Hardy, 1860 (leaves 90-92). Also includes a late 19th century photograph of a house (leaf 18) and lines from various Shakespeare plays with annotations in Collier's hand (leaves 19-20).

Samuel Leigh Sotheby, younger son of auctioneer Samuel Sotheby, was operating his auction house in the Strand, London as Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge in 1844. John Rushout, second Baron Northwick, collected pictures, manuscripts, books and objets de virtu. He maintained his collections at Northwick Park, Middlesex and at Thirlestane House in Cheltenham; after his death in 1859, his heir sold the latter residence to the collector Sir Thomas Phillipps.
